Japanese Monographs
Japanese Studies in World War II

The Japanese Monographs were the first effort by Japanese historians, mostly former staff officers of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) and Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) to record the Japanese military spanning from 1937 until 1945. This includes the Second Sino Japanese War (1937–1945) and World War II in the Pacific (1941–1945). These monographs were written in Japanese then translated into English by U.S. Army, General Headquarters ( GHQ).

Today, Japanese Monographs are part of the U.S. National Archives (NARA) collection as part of the Records of the U.S. Army, Pacific, Organizational History Files. The physical records are part of Record Group 550 (RG550) and are also recorded on microfilm.

Since these Japanese Monographs were written and translated, new insights, documents and research has made portions of them incorrect or irrelevant. In Japan, the Senshi Sōsho 戦史叢書 / Kōkan Senshi 公刊戦史 was the official military history Imperial Japan written during the 1960s and 1970s that used the Japanese Monographs as thier foundation, with more information and corrections added by the Japanese War History Office in Tokyo.
