The Chiran Tokkō-Heiwa-Kaikan 知覧特攻平和会館 (Chiran Kamikaze Peace Hall) is located in Chiran in Kagoshima Prefecture. Founded
in 1975, the museum tells the stories and artifacts
of kamikaze
pilots who flew from Chiran and other bases. Each May 3rd, a
ceremony for war dead is held at the museum.
From Fukuoka's Hakata Station, take the train to Nishi-Kagoshima Station (about 3 hours 45 min) Buses are available in front of Nishi-Kagoshima Station depart for Chiran with 80 minutes travel time directly to museum. In 1955, the statue of Godess Kannon was built with donations from all
over Japan. In 1974, a statue of a Kamikaze pilot was unveiled at the hall. Two replica aircraft armed with wing bombs used in a recent Japanese film were donated to the hall. One is displayed outdoors the other indoors with two ground crew figures.
