Junkers
G.31 (Ju-52)
The angular G.31 (Ju 52) "trimotor" is
remembered for its corrugated skin and angular wings and three engines.
This
transport
went on to later fame during military service with the German
Luftwaffe as the Ju-52.
Junkers in New Guinea
Imported to New Guinea in December
1930 for use with the Bulolo Gold Dredging Ltd., flying from Lae to Bulolo.
The first filght to Bulolo was in March 31, 1931. They carried an average
load of 5,700
lbs. After stripping unecessay gear, limited fuel and good weather, they
carried loads up to 8,290 lbs, and many loads over 7,000lbs.
