Established October 26, 1862, this was the
home to U.S. Army troops. Served as a mobilization and training
garrison, as well as a POW camp. In 1940,
Fort Douglas was comprised of three separate bases: Fort
Douglas, Salt Lake Airbase, and Wendover Bombing and Gunnery
Range. During the war, the base seved
as the headquarters for the 9th Service Command and as a
reception and separation center.
Salt Lake Airbase
In early December 1941, the 7th Bomb Group (B-17s) was training here, and departed
from Fort Douglas to Pearl Harbor, where they arrived during the attack.
Today
On October 26,
1991 the base
was deactivated and most of it turned over to the University
of Utah.
