Established November 6, 1850 on the site of Battery San Jose by the Spanish government in 1797. WWII debarkation point for troops.

Harbor defenses of the Golden Gate were manned by U.S. Army Coastal Artillery Units. The harbor defense system included underwater minefields, anti-aircraft positions, and a maritime shipping control system, in addition several 16" gun batteries:

Fort Cronkhite / Battery Townsley
2 x 16" guns located on the northern flank of Golden Gate

Battery Chamberlain
6" guns on Baker Beach sited on the submarine minefields off the harbor entrance. During the 1940's Baker Beach was heavily fortified with several gun batteries and numerous fighting positions.
