Wartime History
During World War II, San Diego was major staging area for America troops and supplies heading overseas, and gateway for returning servicemen at the end of the Pacific War.

Camp Pendleton (Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton)
The USMC major west coast base bordering Oceanside to the south, San Clemente to the north, and Fallbrook to the east. Established in 1942 to train U.S. Marines for service in World War II. By October 1944, Camp Pendleton was declared a "permanent installation" and by 1946, it became the home of the 1st Marine Division. A portion of I-5 is named "Basilone Road" in honor of Gy/Sgt John Basilone.
