Wartime History
In January 1944, six pilots and twenty-two out of twenty-four aircraft were a squadron of fighter planes from Tarawa flew into a storm near Niutao. Maheu Naniseni, coastwatching on Nui at the time, used his radio to summon help for some of the survivors.
