Ghizo


MapLat 8° 5' 60S Long 156° 50' 60E  Located west of New Georgia and Kolombangara. The island is named after an infamous local head-hunter.

Prior to the war, it was the base of the British District Officer for the Central Solomons. The Japanese developed Gizo into a supply bases for attacks on Guadalcanal in this area.

Site of the busy town of Gizo, with main street of buildings, and fishing villages and market. At 50sq km, Gizo is so small that the inter-island aircraft use nearby Nusatupe Airfield. There are tourist facilities at Gizo. There are several war wrecks in the area to dive on including: a Zero fighter, a Wildcat, Kawanishi flying boat. Also, the wreck of Japanese supply ship, Toa Maru 2.
