Galoping Horse (Thin Red Line)

Location
Nicknamed galoping horse due to the area's grass covered hill spine from the air resembles a 'galoping horse' shape, with the Matanikau River forking around it. This area is located to the west of Sea Horse and the Gifu.

US Army forces cleared a trail from the Matanikau River area up to the battlefield to bring in supplies for the battle that lasted from January 10-13, 1943. The area was defended by elements off the Japanese Army's 228th and 230th Infantry Regiments. This combat was written about in the novel Thin Red Line by James Jones who served there, and adapeted into two Hollywood movies Thin Red Line (1964) and Thin Red Line (1999).
