Location Lat 2° 40' 27S Long 141° 18' 10E Vanimo is located on a peninsula on the north coast of New Guinea. Borders Vanimo Harbor to the north. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of Sepik District in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in the Vanimo-Green River District in West Sepik Province (Sandaun Province) in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Vanimo is the provincial capital of the district and West Sepik Province (Sandaun Province). Connected by the east-west road to Aitape in the east and to the west the international border crossing between Papua New Guinea and Indonesia that connects to Papua Province (Irian Jaya, Dutch New Guinea) and Hollandia (Jayapura). Wartime History During 1943 until early 1944, Japanese ships and barges used Vanimo Harbor as an anchorage. Starting in February 1944 attached by Allied bombers and fighters. On April 22, 1944 bypassed by the U.S. Army landings at Hollandia (Jayapura) to the west and Aitape to the east.
