Location Lat 10° 37' 0S Long 150° 40' 0E Samarai Island is located in the China Strait five kilometers off Milne Bay at the eastern tip of New Guinea. The island has an area of 24 hectares. Nearby is Sariba Island. Also known as Samarar or Samaria. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of Papua. Today located in Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History During the Australian administration in New Guinea, Samarai Island was the provincial headquarters. In 1942, the residents fled the island followed by Australian military, they left their houses and possession behind, and the installations on the island was torched by Sgt Les Arnold at the end of March 1942. Too small for an airfield, it was used as a base for flying boats. Japanese missions against Samarai February 23, 1942 Today Post war, Alotau became the new provincial headquarters 1968 because of overcrowding and the inconvenient location of Samarai Island.
