Rooke Island

Island fifteen miles north of the northern coast of New Britain Island.

Wartime History
Occupied by five hundered Japanese of the 51st Reconnaissance Regiment, commanded by Col. Jiro Sato. The Japanese abandoned the island in early December, retreating to Cape Bushing.

Company B, 1st Marine Division landed on February 12, 1944 to occupy the island, but found it unoccupied.
