Northern coast of Papuan
peninsula where the Japanese began their overland assault
over the Owen Stanley Mountains, and where they fought bitterly
as Australian and American forces battled them back to the
beach at Buna. There were some 17 airfields on the Popondetta
plains during WWII. The Japanese had two [actually one and
a half, because they never completed the second] airfields.
