A Catholic mission station was established on Lihir Island.
Wartime History
Occupied by the Japanese. Possibly, used as a seaplane base or operating area by Japanese aircraft. A cave on the island was used by Japanese submarines for shelter.
Coastwatcher Murray
Expatriate Harry Murray escaped the
Japanese occupation of New Ireland. Later in the war, he returned to Lihir as a coastwatcher to report Japanese activities, including observing enemy submarines using the island.
