Location Dregerhaffen Harbor and Dregerhaffen village are located south of Finschhafen (Finschafen) on the north coast of New Guinea. During World War II, known to the Allies as "Dreger Harbor" as a shortened version of the name. Also spelled Dreger Haffen Harbor (two words) or Finschhafen Harbor incorrectly. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Dreger Harbor PT Boat Base (Dreger Haffen Harbor) U.S. Navy (USN) PT Boat bases was established at this location at the end of November 1943. Used as the main PT Boat base New Guinea until June 15, 1944. HMAS Tarangau Postwar, the U.S. withdrew and turned the base area over to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and was renamed HMAS Tarangau and used to refuel and resupply RAN warships. On January 1, 1950 the base moved to Lombrum Naval Base on Manus Island in the Admiralty Islands and this base was closed. Later, Lombrum Naval Base was renamed HMAS Tarangau in honor of the original name. Ki-61-I Tony Ditched off Dregerhaffen into Dregerhaffen Harbor.
