Featherston
POW Camp
This POW
camp was the site of a riot on February 25, 1943, when 240
rebelious POWs inside the No 2 Compound refused to
go on work detail. The
incident was planned by Lt(jg) Adachi Totaro, and sat down
in protest in the camp. Firghtened New
Zealand
guards opened fire on the protesters. When
it ended, one New Zealander was dead (Private Wattie Pelvin),
and 48 Japanese POWs dead and
many
wounded. Adachi Toshio survived, was repatriated to Japan
where he was to become a minister and visited Featherston in
1986 on a missions of remembrance and goodwill.
