Location Lat 35° 21' 1N Long 139° 31' 35E Ōfuna 大船 is located Kanagawa Prefecture on Honshū in Japan. Also spelled Ofuna. To the south is Yokohama. Ofuna Camp (Yokosuka Kaigun Keibitai Ueki Bunkentai) Ofuna Camp was located at Ofuna. Known to the Japanese as "Yokosuka Kaigun Keibitai Ueki Bunkentai" (Yokosuka Ueki Detachment for Yokosuka Naval Security Force), commander Yokura Sashizo. Americans referred to the location as "Ofuna POW Camp" or "Ofuna Interrogation Center". Operated by the Japanese Navy Keibitai as a questioning facility for Allied Prisoners Of War (POW). After interrogation, prisoners were transfered to the Japanese Army Kempei Tai (Military Police) who were responsible for prisoners. Ofuna was not registered as a formal POW Camp with the Red Cross, nor were the Japanese supposed to interrogate POWs outside POW camps, a violation of the Hague Convention. There would be no Red Cross supervision, no improved treatment. No humanity. I wouldn’t be registered as an official prisoner of war. Men left the camp to be either executed or relocated. If you died there, no one would know but your brothers in arms." William L. Hasty pilot P-38J 42-104359 interrned 1944 until the end of the war. 2nd Lt. Warren H. Ransler radar B-29 44-69871 interned May 1945 until the end of the war. Postwar Thirty Japanese personnel that operated this facility were found guilty as B class and C class war criminals. Commander Yokura Sashizo was sentenced to 25 years of hard labor.
