Location Lat 0° 58' 0S Long 131° 4' 0E Samate is located at an elevation of 46' / 14m at the northeastern of Salawati Island in the in the Raja Ampat Group (Raja Ampat Islands). Also spelled Semate. In Indonesian known as Kampoeng Samate (Samate Village). To the west is the Vogelkop Peninsula (Bird's Head Peninsula) of western New Guinea. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in Dutch New Guinea (DNG) in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in Raja Ampat Regency in West Papua Province (West Irian Jaya) of Indonesia. Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese who built Samate Airfield at this location. Starting in the middle of June 1944 attacked by Allied aircraft until the end of the Pacific War. Occupied by the Japanese until the end of the Pacific War.
