Built by the Japanese Navy, under the command of Captain Kitawaga who also oversaw its defense. Once completed, it was never used operationally. Supposedly, it was bombed as soon as it was completed.

FSM Capital
On the site of the former airfield, the Government buildings for legislation and congress etc were built in the 1980s. The FSM government offices are all located here, also the president's office and the offices of the leaders from the other FSM islands. This is where all the congress-type business is attended to and so this mini village is called the FSM Capital. Nobody actually lives here it si offices only.

The Japanese had a large concrete searchlight installation on the summit of this hill which is still there today. The whole hill is crisscrossed with trenches and emplacements for field guns. Photo by Stan Gajda.

Stan Gajda reports:
"I have found a few 6.5mm and 13mm cartridges up there. In recent years some yahoos undid the searchlight and rolled the drum down the hill where it finished up in the bush near the PBJ wreck and all smashed up."
