Location Tarlena is located on the Bonis Peninsula on the northwest coast of Bougainville. To the southeast is Chabai. Prewar and during the Pacific War, part of Kieta District in the Territory of New Guinea and considered part of the North Solomons, Northern Solomons. During 1975 became Bougainville Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). On June 25, 2002 became the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB). Today located in Kunua Rural LLG of Northern Bougainville District. Wartime History During early 1942 occupied by the Japanese. During early 1944, the Japanese began tending gardens to grow food around Tarlean. During early March 1944, Japanese troops withdrew from Taiof Island using native canoes and attempted to reach Tarlean but were ambushed by villagers loyal to ANGAU. Occupied until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945.
