Lunga Point

Looking towards Kukum / Lunga Point
from Skyline Ridge memorial on the west bank of the Matanikau River

I never managed to get up there but I wanted to. I had seen 1970's pictures of the wreckage on the beach from the US Naval base. We tried to drive up there in 1998 but the roads are still dirt tracks and we almost got bogged down. Nobody goes there much, so we could not find anyone who knew a good route. The Police Bomb disposal guys periodically take Ordnance up there and blow it up. They have a 4 wheel drive vehicle though!

The closest I got was half way up Kukum beach and half way between the Lunga Lagoon and Ilu River. I would have walked to the Point from there, but that meant wading and they told me there are still some alligators in the water up there. The best way would be to hire a boat and go up there, but we did not have time.
