Chris Cowx    Plum Pudding / Kennedy Island

Kolombangara Island in the distance, as seen from JFK's hiding place on Plum Pudding Island

Plum Pudding facing Gizo.

For the Kennedy buffs there is the attraction of Plum Pudding, now also known as Kennedy Island. It is located about three miles from Gizo itself. I took one of the Kennedy's boats and employees to see it. It is absolutely gorgeous! Not to take anything away from John F. Kennedy's predicament of 1943 but if I had to be stranded anywhere this would be high on my list.

Of course, I did not have the Japanese waiting less than three miles away and likely to behead me.It is a beautiful little island that is ringed with shallow reefs. On one side is a view to Gizo and the other has a very dramatic view of Kolambangara, a volcanic island that was also a Japanese base at the time. I suspect that Lt. Kennedy was not an appreciator of the view at the time! The reefs are loaded with colourful fish and the beaches are fantastic. The island is a total of about 100m around and is covered in trees. Well worth a picnic and some diving or snorkelling.
