Daniel Leahy  Longreach

Photos and text by Daniel Leahy from his September 2001 visits.

The birth place of Australia's first commercial air line, Qantas. The hangar and strip was used by the USAAF for B-17s during the war. These photos were taken at Longreach, Queensland on September 4th, 2001.

The hangar was set up in the 1920s, and was where Australia's first commercial airline, Qantas, started operations from in 1922.

When war broke out, the hangar and field was used by the USAAF as an airbase for B-17 Flying Fortresses.

According to Roger Marks' book, 'Queensland Airfields WW2 - 50 Years On', the following units of the US 19 BG were based at Longreach:

28 BS c May 05, 1942 - Jul 07, 1942
30 BS c May 13, 1942 - c Jul 24, 1942
93 BS May 18, 1942 - Jul 23, 1942

Today, the hangar is used as stage 1 of the Qantas Founders Outback Museum, whose centrepiece is an Avro 504k biplane.
