The remains of a USAAF C-47B (VH-CGK) located
at Carnarvon Gorge, Queensland that I took on September 5th, 2001.
The aircraft crashed on the property of Rewan on November 16th,
1943 (some memorials have this listed as November 9th) during
a bad electrical storm.
There were 5 Americans (the crew) and 14 Australians on board
- all were killed. The Americans were returned to the US and the
Australians buried in the Rockhampton
cemetary.
The port wing, an engine and landing gear have
been erected in the Carnarvon National Park as a monument to those
who were killed. Of particular interest is the US insignia found
on the wing - it appears as if the white bar has been hastily
added to the pre-43 star in circle logo... The back of the wing
has been hacked by what looks to be an axe.
The other engine is now located in the town of Springure (approx.
70km away from the Carnarvon Gorge memorial) as a monument where
the bodies were originally transported to.
