History
Japanese Naval Gun was emplaced at the western end of Buna Airfield (Old Strip) during the middle of 1942.
During the Battle of Buna in late December 1942, it was depressed
to fire horizontally at the approaching Australian tanks and troops. It is
reputed to be the gun that destroyed Stuart
M3A1 Tank 2017, which it was still pointed towards until the tank was
recovered.
Wreckage
The barrel is scared with shrapnel damage and pointed
upward. An empty ammunition
case is next to the gun. Another mount for a similar weapon is nearby.
