Warplanes over Japan

Post by leaustin »

Does anyone here know what types of US warplanes were used over Japan during WWII? I know the B-29 was used - high flying recon, bombing runs - was it able to dive and strafe ground targets? Was the P-51 used?

Posted on Wrecks&Losses to no avail so trying here. I'm working on a 2nd edition of a book about my Japanese mother's life during the War and need some details. Thanks for any help.

Hi Linda:

There are many books available which talk about what types of planes the US used over Japan.

Anyway, P-51's, B-25's, B-24's, B-29's, PB4Y's, F6F's, TBM's, Corsairs, SB2C's, P-38's, and P-47's. Probably others too.

I searched on the internet and couldn't find anything conclusive except the B-29. My mom talks about the P-51s diving after people, but I could not verify that plane was used. It could have been near the end of the war when some of the islands nearer Japan were taken so the planes with smaller fuel tanks could actually reach the Japanese mainland. I was hoping to get an easier answer than finding and reading a book! Ah, well, a book about it should be interesting.

Thank you for that info. If you haven't checked the Books, Media forum yet, I entered a link for a YouTube video of P-51's strafing Japan. They were escorting a B-29. It's very interesting footage.
