My father Arthur P Herin Jr aka Speedy served with VP 44 Black Cats on Green Island(aka Nissan) from 1942-1944. He was a Radioman on the PBY5A Black Cats that flew night patrols and missions against Japanese shipping and bases. My father passed away in August of 2010 at age 92 . I am his son Arthur W. Herin and would like to hear from anyone or any relatives of the Black Cat Veterans. I can be reached via e-mail at mortarman120gang@yahoo.com. I would like to take a moment to thank all of my fellow veterans and especially the WWII veterans for their sacrifices and dedication. Semper Fidelis Arthur W. Herin

Hi Arthur, Sorry for your loss. Unfortunately I don't know any veterans of VP 44, but I would be really interested in hearing the results of your search. Please post any info and stories if you find something of interest. Thanks!

Hello Arthur,

The 93rd Seabees Battalion has an excellent website including an article (book?)
GREEN ISLAND IN WORLD WAR II 1944: BASE No.7
BLACK CAT PBY CATALINAS And PT BOAT TEAMS
by Milton W. Bush, Jr., Esq., 205 Tri-Mountain Road, Durham, CT 06422: 860-349-1418

There is not much information on VP-44 but it may be of interest.

The website also includes a page on Green Island.

There are quite a few websites devoted to the crews who flew the Catalina and I hope you find one that connects you with veterans and families of VP-44.

Here is a collection of logbooks of PBY aviators including three from VP-44
