US defence team to look for pilots missing since WW II
Itanagar, Jun 4 (PTI) A US defence team will arrive here to coordinate a search for hundreds of missing-in-action (MIA) American pilots since World War II, which ended over six decades ago.
Hundreds of fighter planes went missing while flying the 'hump' of the Himalayan air corridor through Arunachal Pradesh to maintain supply of essentials to the Allied Forces fighting the Japanese in the China-Burma-India war theatre during the war.
Wreckages of at least six of WW-II planes were found in different parts of the hilly state, including one at Itanagar by a private American investigator in the past three years, official sources said.
The five-member team of US Joint Prisoner of War/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) team accompanied by US Consul General in Kolkata, Henry V Jardine will arrive here on June 24 for three days.
Lt Col Peter Huddle, Lt Col Bruce E Cox, Maj Craig Tippins, Maj William J Taylor and Capt J K Marcus will be the team members, sources said today.
Jardine had visited the state in March following reports of recovery of wreckages and Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu has assured all help to the mission, they said.
