Yao and Palau

Post by divedds »

I'll be going to Yap and Palau (including Peleliu) soon. I've done the land tours, but I am looking for ship wrecks within scuba depths, any recommendations?

Palau has good wreck diving but most have been salvaged in the 1950's. Not like Truk. Some good aircraft wrecks are off Koror and the latest find (2000) was a minesweeper that sank after hitting a mine off Anguar. Unfort. it is very deep, beyond safe scuba limits but the vis, I hear, is unbelievable! All wrecks off Peleliu are too deep, Yap doesn't offer any wreck diving since nothing large was sunk within divable depths.

Good luck, Eric

but there are some really good WWII wrecks in Palau.

Sam's tours hold a specific wreck week sometime in May - you could have a look at their web page for details

You have a couple of decent planes there - a Jap Aichi E13A float plane just off Sam's jetty - there's a Zero in poor shape in the shallows, but an inverted Zero intact at Tim's reef at 23m.

Ships include Teshio Maru, Ryuko Maru, Amatsu Maru, Chuyo Maru, Helmet wreck, WWII Japanese refrigeration wreck at Kesebekuu Channel, Iro, Gozan Maru.

In addition - at least 2 Jake -Aichi floatplanes at southern Baeldaob, Kibi Maru, Wakatake destroyer.

That's all I have listed.
