Mystery A/C wreckage on Iwo Jima
While reviewing Iwo Jima on http://www.google.earth.com I noted the wreckage of a large aircraft on the island. Although the photo shows only a partial view of the fuselage it appears to be a transport and possibly postwar (maybe a C-124 ?). It's located at 24 deg 47' 15.52" N x 141 deg 18' 52.93"E . In any case exploring Iwo is pretty interesting via the satellite photo.

Hello,
new to this forum and saw this post. A quick check of the USAF serial data base website shows a C-124A serial 51-149 as having crashed on the island on 20 nov 1955. The listing didn't show a cause or if the wreck was salvaged/ cleaned up. Could be the aircraft in the picture, but can't zoom in enough for a good look.

Thanks so much for responding to my note. I have to agree that the imagery is a bit fuzzy but it no doubt is a C-124. It seemed a bit too big to be of a WWII vintage as well as the majority of the wartime debris on Iwo appears to have been cleaned up.
