RAN Inspects Japanese Midget Submarine off Sydney Today

Post by Daniel Leahy »

Hi All,

Just caught this article on the television. Details online can be found here:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/20 ... 928423.htm
Navy divers inspecting Japanese sub off Sydney
Navy divers are conducting an archaeological survey of the wreck of a Japanese midget submarine found off Sydney's northern beaches.

Historians hope the inspection will help piece together what happened in the final hours of the M-24 submarine.

It disappeared in 1942 after an attack on Sydney Harbour, and was found by amateur divers only last year.

The navy says sand has filled part of the wreck which will make it difficult to work out if the remains of the two submariners are still on board.

Divers are also checking the state of undetected scuttling charges.

A heritage order protects the site.

Anyone caught disturbing the wreck faces a $1 million fine and five years jail.
