Darwin Raid - 65th Anniversary

Post by Daniel Leahy »

Hi All,

Today marks the 65th Anniversary of the first Japanese air raid on Darwin. The following comes from the ABC website:
F/A-18, sirens mark air raid anniversary

Two F/A-18 Hornets have swooped low over Darwin, tracing the path of Japanese planes that bombed the city 65 years ago today.

More than 240 people died and thousands more fled as the Japanese planes unleashed their bombs on Darwin on February 19, 1942.

Today Hornets streaked over the city to the sound of air raid sirens and artillery fire.

Veterans and survivors gathered from around Australia to mark the anniversary and lay wreaths at the cenotaph.

A separate ceremony is being held at Darwin's wharf where 22 workers died during the first of the 64 bombing raids on Australia's north.
