P-47N Info Needed

Post by serlanger »

I am researching a cousin who was assigned to the 57th Air Service Group and was killed (DNB) JUL-30-45 at Okinawa (but I believe he was stationed on Ie Shima). I was told that he was killed helping a fighter pilot. Assuming that this is true, I have found through various sites that there are three planes that crashed in some manor around that time. The serial numbers are:

44-87877 (318FG/73FS) - Pilot?: Ayler, John W III
44-88253 (507FG/463FS) - Pilot?: Payne, Vincent R
44-88268 (507FG)

I was wondering if anyone has any information about these planes to help confirm the story.

Cousin's name is: Sgt. Thomas J. ODea / HQ & Base Services Sq / ASN:12019693

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

- Scott
