Aircraft on Deal Island

Post by Colin C Tigwell »

In September 1943, an Airspeed Oxford of the RAAF, crashed on Deal Island, and all four were killed.

They were originally buried on the Island, but in 1944 were moved to the mainland.

The serial of the airplane was AS618.

The Island is fairly small, and has a small airstrip on it, which is no longer used.

On the oposite side of the Island, in a ravene, apparently is another aircraft crash. It is reported as being a twin engined aircraft, with V12 engines.

This really means that the aircraft is a P38 or a HDH Mosquito.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this one.

Thanks

Hi one of the pilots who died in the Oxford crash had some of his kit for sale on ebay recently. I got one of his goggles (utility pair) other items were his flight helmet etc. I guess these were his spares. Cheers Rod

I guess the real situation, is that he would not have needed either in the Oxford
