Re: Family of KIA
There is a statement in the MACR for this loss (given by Stewart A Anderson who was one of the survivors) regarding Barbee. He states that after six days on life rafts, they were strafed by a Japanese fighter. The men may have jumped in the water to escape the strafing, but Barbee was hit in the bac...

Re: Crash site in Chirime Valley, Owen Stanley, PNG
After a little more research, I think this style of exhaust ("12" pipes on each side) was used on the P-39F and on the P-400 (a version of the P-39). These may be the only Allison powered planes to use this style as all photos I can find of P-40s use a "six" exhaust system. The Allison engine was a ...

Re: Crash site in Chirime Valley, Owen Stanley, PNG
I received an e-mail from Vladimir. He does not think the above crash is the correct one. He sent a map showing the location of the area where the wreck occurred. It is a circle of radius 3 km, centered at -8.637,147.623 (as located on Google Maps). The pictures of the exhaust pipes look to me somet...

Re: Crash site in Chirime Valley, Owen Stanley, PNG
There was the crash of a P-47, possibly in the area of Goilala N.G as that is mentioned as in the search area. MACR 8082 for P-47 42-26681, flown by Philip Henry Vinall. Vinall was killed in the crash which occurred on 6 August 44. At some point his body was recovered. He is now buried in the Manila...

Re: Roy M Young Service ID 0-692112
Roy M Young is still listed as MIA on the official military files. Here is a link:
http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo/wwii/reports/aaf_m_y.htm
This implies that his body was never found, so it was never returned from overseas.

Re: 1st Marine Air Wing R4D 16-4706
Some of the War Diaries for VMJ-253 for 1943 are online on fold3.com. I can find the names of William Snyder and Neal Williams in them, so I think I am in the right group. The plane 4706 appears to have made many flights and appears in the diary up to June 18 1943 when it made a flight from New Cale...

Arthur Littman was a casualty on the HMT Rohna, which was sunk Nov 26, 1943. Here is a link which has his name listed on the casualty lists. Search for Littman on the page. http://www.dvrbs.com/rohna/RohnaIndex.htm This sinking of the Rohna was kept very quiet during the war as it was sunk by a new ...

Re: History of the USS Sculpin SS191
Glad I could help. I read that report a couple of times and it almost seems like "they" (officers?) are trying to convince themselves one way or the other on what happened. They go through process of "collecting" evidence (interviews with who heard what) and finally decide that maybe the attack didn...

Re: Need Information On B-25
I wonder if possibly the date given in the question is incorrect. Below is a link about a crash on 4 Aug 43 off Wangat. It mentions that at least one website had posted the date incorrectly as 4 Aug 42. It has quite a bit of information about the crew and the story is very similar to what was posted...

The war logs of US submarines are available for free on fold3.com. Log on and go to the WWII Section. Pick Browse all the Records and following into the section on Submarine Patrol Reports. You can actually find the report on the Sculpin for March of 1942. If you read the report of the attack, you w...

Re: Lost 1943
The MACR 1218 for the loss of B-15 41-30190 has an interesting map of the attack. The planes were on a low level attack on 2 destroyers at Simpson Harbor, Rabaul. The plane Rice was on was hit as it passed over one of the destroyers. Rice's plane dropped two bombs, one hit the ship and set it on fir...

Re: U.S.S. Juneau Wreck
Interesting. There is conflicting information about this. Some sources say three torpedoes were fired others say two. Here is a link to a fairly detailed description of the the I-26's movements. It notes that 3 tubes were damaged (out of the six forward tubes) in the grounding on 18 Oct 42 and relat...

Re: Dakota wreckage near Kaisenik PNG
I think the serial number is mission the last digit. 43-1620 is not the serial number of a C-47, but the series 43-1620? is a series of C-47s. Both 43-16204 and 43-16205 are listed as being lost in New Guinea. 43-16205 was ground looped so can't be this wreck. But 43-16204 is listed as being lost in...
