Re: Plane in the lagoon at Orona

Just a couple of points. On this thread at post 457 there is an image of another page from the book, which shows the Printed Date as October 5, 1935 and the Published Date as October 10, 1935. The Librarian's stamp with a date of October 25, 1935 is on another page. So the Librarian stamp date is no...

Re: VMB-612 Marine PBJ's off of Saipan

I believe this is a little more information on Madvay, Edward 1st Lt, O-023042 He was declared dead on 24 January, 1946. He went missing on 27 Nov 1944, flying a PBJ-1D, a navy/marine version of a B-25. His father was Michael Madvay, then living at 310 Drake Ave, Roselle NJ. His mother was Bertha. H...

Re: USN MIA March 22 1944

A slight followup on my previous post. There is a 37 page history of VP-33 on fold3.com. The first page is here: https://www.fold3.com/image/301981888 Regarding the loss of this crew, there is this brief reference. ------- From 15 of February to the 25th of March, 1944, the squadron was based at SAM...

Re: USN MIA March 22 1944

Slightly off topic, but here is an interesting post that involves Kenneth Shields, one of the crewmen. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/239946-wwii-kia-brothers-usnusmc-phngcm-grouping/ fold3.com has some information on some of the men. (A paid site but often gives free access...

Re: WWII Remains Recovery

There was a book published in 2013 or so called "The Search that Never Was", by J. L. Wright. https://www.amazon.com/Search-That-Never-Was-Personnel/dp/1625166796 Some of it can be seen online here: https://books.google.com/books?id=nJOdAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA16&lpg=PA16&dq=%22American+Graves+Registration+Se...

Re: Jap Zero wing tip tube

Ozzi, Given your questions regarding the Zero you might find the following of interest. http://aviationweek.com/blog/how-build-zero-1945 The article above contains 5 other links. One is a link which concerns an Oscar nominated film about the designer of the Zero, called "The Wind Rises". Probably of...

Re: Google Earth and Airfield Locations

It looks like your National Library has the maps you seek, but they are not all digitized, so this probably does not help you much. Here is the "top" index map. http://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-233366531/view Here, for example is Gasmata Airdrome link (but not the map): http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/1623129...

Re: Google Earth and Airfield Locations

Funta, very interesting info. I am sure you already have this but your father's 33 page RAAF file is available on fold3.com. Surprisingly not much information in it and lots of hand written pages. There is also information on the web regarding the 593rd EBSR which had a Lt Yancey L James in Company ...

Re: Google Earth and Airfield Locations

Funta, What was your father's name and rank. Are you sure the PBY's involved were US Navy planes? The Army Air Forces also flew PBYs in their Emergency Rescue Squadrons. Can you tell anything from the video as to possibly colors and markings on the towed PBY? I would guess the LCM was from Neomfoor,...

Re: Google Earth and Airfield Locations

Here are some maps that may help you. Some of the roads shown are still there today. You can work out the locations from the latitude and longitude scales given on the bottom of the page "index to sheets" sections. Re: Edwin John Turk KIA December 25, 1943 - Beaufort Navigator

There is a description of the loss on page 5 on this link. http://raafavic.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Contact-Summer-2015.pdf .... RAAF 8 Squadron based at Vivigani strip on Goodenough Island was involved in an attack on Rabaul on Christmas Day in 1943. The crew of Beaufort A9-444 was compris...

Re: Plane in the lagoon at Orona

There is a line about the loss of this plane in the book "PBJ Mitchell Units of the Pacific" by Jerry Scutts. The unit was first moved on the escort carrier USS Kalinin Bay from the US to Ewa, Hawaii. "A weak hook on a Ford Island crane caused VMB-413's first PBJ loss during unloading at Peal Harbor...

Re: Plane in the lagoon at Orona

Here is the crew of the plane. All listed as missing from VMB-413 at Tutulia on this site: https://missingmarines.com/ Again a slight date difference as all are listed as lost on January 22, 1944. I believe the loss occurred when VMB-413 was moving to their first base in January, 1944. They first we...
