Re: 41-9234: A Very Unusual B-17

I'm adding this to clarify my last post. Here are a couple of examples that show the apparently redundant use of the letters “A.C.” following “AIR CORPS SERIAL NO.” on B-17Es in the Pacific. First the 19th Bomb Group’s Tojo’s Nightmare . http://users.beagle.com.au/stevepb/2497.jpg A slightly differe...

Re: 41-9234: A Very Unusual B-17

Could it be that what appears to be "A.D." is actually "A.C." and a redundant indication of "Air Corps"?

41-9234: A Very Unusual B-17

http://users.beagle.com.au/stevepb/BlackCat.jpg Everybody knows about 41-9234, the shattered B-17E still lying on a hillside at the head of Black Cat Pass near Wau, New Guinea. For years this aircraft was a "mystery" because it appeared to have Royal Air Force markings - roundels on her wings and f...

B-17E 41-9234

I'm hoping somebody here can help me with a fairly obscure detail about B-17E 41-9234 (and 41-9196, 41-9235 and 41-9244 for that matter). In the photo below of Alley-Oop you can see the "standard" factory-applied data block on a contemporary B-17E . . . US ARMY - MODEL B-17E, AIR CORPS SERIAL NO. 41...
