Re: Zamperini B-24 loss

Thanks Jesse. I received a message from a historian at B-24BESTWEB, indicating that the plane was 42-40101. On the other hand, some say that the B-24 in question is 41-24097, since Zamperini mentions leading the 372nd on a bomb mission in his book. Thanks, I appreciate the help. TonyM. I forgot to ...

Re: B-17E # 41-9209

The following is from the pacificwrecks.com summary for this accident. Mission History While taking off on a bombing mission from 7-Mile Drome at 1:48am, the tire and rim came off this B-17 on take off which might have punctured the bomber's hydraulic system. The aircraft cleared the runway but at a...

Re: B-17E # 41-9209

Just a casual search of my accident data base has turned up at least six B-17 Brake failure accidents. Four of those accidents resulted in fatalities. See: 2-18-43 (non-fatal) 4-12-43 (McCullar) 8-15-43A (see my Stateside accident book) 9-17-43 (non-fatal) 11-20-43 (see my Stateside accident book) 1...

Re: B-17E # 41-9209

This is my view on the B-17E take-off accident that killed Major Kenneth McCullar on April 12, 1943, at Jackson Airdrome, Port Moresby, PNG--the famous "Wallaby" accident. I first purchased this accident report in 2003 and a few years later wrote the following summary concerning this unusual accide...

Re: Zamperini B-24 loss

PF, Thanks for the links. An Update: I have a new copy of the book. I had checked both Wiki and pacificwrecks weeks ago and the thread on the aaf.com link was started by me. None of these sources list the AC serial number, which is the info I am still looking for. Tried Baugher and BestB-24 but have...

Re: I have the location maps of my dad's B 25

Kilroy, I noticed that you had a question mark next to the squadron info. Took a look for this. According to Hickey's book on the 345BG, the B-25D # 41-30071 was assigned to the 501BS. There is a photo of the airplane and information on page 100-101 in the text about this crash landing in Hickey's b...

Re: I have the location maps of my dad's B 25

Kilroy, Those walk out stories are always good and exciting and I am glad they made it. Were the other men in the crew who did not walk out with your father killed in the crash landing? And I noticed two men who walked out but were not part of the crew. These would be airmen from other downed airpla...

Re: I have the location maps of my dad's B 25

I am an aviation accident researcher and author. What is the serial number of the airplane? What day did it crash? Who was on board the airplane? Do you have an MACR number? Maybe I can turn up some info in my data base of accidents. If the airplane is still there, some one on this forum might know ...

Re: C-87 41-24027

Evidence indicates that the correct date is 2 August 1943.

That means that the AAF Form No. 14 Aircraft Accident Report for this C-87 is mis-filed under 1 August 1942 on the microfilm record.

Thanks to all who helped.
