John.... cant help you re Manatuto...but Google Earth will give you a good? look at the coastline and ? cliffs. While you are there...might you visit the old Dili airfield.?..you can see it on GE. much closer to town than the new one on the coast. When I was thru there in an Auster in 1970 ..there w...

Re: What Pacific based book are you reading at the moment?

Just completed "Zero Hour at Broome". One excellent read. Great history of that tragic event, and material on all the aircraft types at that time.
Pity no-one has yet found the wreckage of the B24, shot down off shore.

Re: information of any US, British, and Aussie kit?

D 152. guadalcanal. just off the road west from Honiara by about 10-25 miles, there is a Sherman tank dissabled during those battles, with a shell hole through the turret. About 10 miles east of Honiara lined up just inland from the beach are a dozen or so, amphtrack? vehicles. Top spot for relics, ...

Re: Book on 39th Fighter Squadron & Baker's Creek Crash

Would be interesting to see a picture of the memorial at the Selfridge gate, Arlington National Cemetary, Ft Myers. Beside the Bruce Hwy at Bakers Creek there is also a memorial, a tower with a large brass B17 C on top. The actual crash site is slightly further east towards the coast, I believe. The...

Re: Push to recognise Japan WWII soldiers in Darwin

Why not remember the brave and the dead ...from all sides. Lest we forget. Everyone are victims. The full military honours shown by the Australian Navy to the Japanese submariners that died in Sydney Harbour attack earned Australia great respect for its humanity from Japan... even then in the early ...

Sounds like a fascinating area for WW2 history. See Wikipedia re Battle for Ambon. The massacre at Laha was in retaliation to the Japanese loss of life when a mine sank a Jap ship in Bay of Ambon. Position of that ship should be known by some older Ambonese. Post again whatever you find,... any airc...

Re: What Pacific based book are you reading at the moment?

Just finished RUFF STUFF by Tina Susedik. The story of Norbert C Ruff, pilot with the 80th FS in PNG, flying P39, P400 and P38. Fascinating yarn and good pictures. Gives a good insight into the problems of the Pacific war in the early days. He knocked down 4 confirmed and some damaged? all in the P3...

Hi Pansy.Late finder of yr post re yr Uncle and NZ 5429. A recycle it into Wrecks and Losses might help. Years ago I met Brian Bennet in Rabaul. Forester, wreck hunter/finder and worked with JPAC, the MIA US aircrew people. He would probably know of this aircraft and location. Try bjb_56@yahoo.com.a...

Re: Recover them Yes or No

Seems a bizarre criteria for recovery or not. Some recoverable /restorable wrecks may have had the pilot come to grief before... bailed out, or after the crash /landing... didnt survive on the ground. All wrecks with bone fragments, recovered and properly treated with respect, give the relatives clo...

Chhoky,.. Just after a airsurvey visit to Buin in '68, and a look at Yamamoto's Betty site.. there was a RNZAF Corsair that went missing in '43? found nearby, as locals cleared bush for a garden. Maybe one for you to hunt up and photograph .. if you dont already know of.

Safe travels

Re: What Pacific based book are you reading at the moment?

Just finished a re-read of "The Searchers" by J Eames. Covers just a few of the many missing RAAF aircraft and aircrew, from the searcher parties put out thru PNG, Dutch New Guinea, Halmaheras and etc. Keith Rundle et al, really busted themselves in extremely difficult conditions. One guy even took ...
