Re: B-24 Crash 3 March 1942

Trying to track down a newspaper story from 1944. Has anyone seen this reference:

Enid (Okla.) Morning News 19 May 1944

Thanks in advance

Pottery mark on ceramic from Japanese destroyer, Truk Lagoon

Hi all

I've been approached to identify a potter's mark, found on a ceramic piece from a Japanese destroyed, wrecked in Truk Lagoon. It's completely stumped me, but if anyone can help, please see attached image. Suggested id. was that it's from a Dutch flying unit?

USAT 'Liberty'

Hi all Just had a wonderful opportunity to dive on USAT 'Liberty' at Tulamben, Bali, Indonesia. Ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in January 1941. The crew beached the ship to salvage cargo. 'Liberty' was apparently beached and lay exposed until 1963 when the eruption of Mt Agung slipped th...

RAAF Catalina A24-24 wreck found off Bowen, Qld

The magazine 'Fish & Boat' (May, 2011:8) has just run a story on the discovery of the RAAF's Catalina A24-24 off Bowen, lying in 40 metres of water. Apparently the wreck site is 'closed' as a secret fishing spot to only but a select few. Doesn't show much respect for the family members of the victim...

Re: B-24 Crash 3 March 1942

Hi Peter, Thank you for your post. I think that the 'main' myth that you perpetuate in 'Zero Hour' is the absurd belief that 40-2374 shot down Kudo! I just can't stomach the notion and given that you present a very weak argument to justify such a comment, I just had to 'shoot' you down. You presente...

Re: B-24 Crash 3 March 1942

Hi Edward, I hope to publish a review of the book before xmas. I've read it and flagged points of interest with sticky flags. The book's edges now looks like the frilly skirt of a Spanish dancer!

I'll publish the review here on this website; probably the best place.

Re: B-24 Crash 3 March 1942

From Bob Livingstone and for the record: 40-2370 is 'Arabian Knight' (not 'Arabian Nights'), which was destroyed on the aerodrome at Broome, 3 March 1942. 40-2374 is the B-24A shot down off Broome, 3 March 1942, lost without trace. Believed to have been shot down by Lt. (jg) Osamu Kudo (3rd Kokutai,...

Re: B-24 Crash 3 March 1942

Hi all, regarding personnel list B-24A (40-2370 or 40-2374), here's my info. on those on board. Perhaps only an archaeological assessment of the wreck site will reveal what aircraft it actually was and whether or not it was carrying armaments. Seq Name Serial Number Rank Service Status Comments 1. B...

Re: B-24 Crash 3 March 1942

Hi Tony The release of Tom Lewis and Peter Ingman's latest book 'Zero Hour in Broome: the untold story of the attacks on northwest Australia in 1942' raises the ugly specter of identifying 'Arabian Nights' again. Tom believes that the B24A shot down off Broome was 40-2370! He also runs with the theo...

Re: Loss of Flying Boat CIRCE Feb 28 1942

Hi Gordy Fantastic info. on the Empire boats on the Tjilatjap/Broome shuttle. I hope, for the record, you can name the owner of the film. There was a 6 mm film of the air raid at Broome, but was given to someone to copy and got lost/destroyed in the process. What a pity. The film, apparently, showed...
