Re: New Forum Policy - New Members Must Post Welcome Message
It is an honor to be part of this community of people dedicated to preserving our WWII heritage. My late father, Marvin King, was a right scanner on a B-29 with the 371st Bomber Squadron (307th Bomber Group) flying out of Kadena, Okinawa. His aircraft was shot down by Russian-piloted MIG-15s on Apri...

Thanks for all the information, Don. I can't wait to hear about your trip to Guadalcanal.
I'm going to Peleliu, Yap and Truk in the late summer.
Does anyone have any feedback regarding Yap or Truk?

Good luck in trying to get stuff off the island! They can be strict. I tried to get a spent .50 cal shell casing off the island, in '02, and it was taken away from me during luggage inspection. I did manage to get a few other things squirreled away, go figure. There are local villagers who will offe...

Recovery
Does anyone know why there isn't the same fervor to recover vehicles such as tanks, trucks etc..? There is intense interest in recovering all aircraft regardless if they contain human remains or not. Yet there seem to be a lot of tracked vehicles rusting into the ground witih no one clamouring after...
Yap trip
Can anyone make recommendations on where to stay on Yap?
How about a good dive guide / tour guide? Anything to be aware of? Cautionary tales?

Grandfather's plane
Hi Macca, I have had similar things happen which made me beleive something or someone was guiding me. Obscure information falls into my lap, or people call me out of the blue with related facts. I'm not overly religious but feel there is a spiritual realm out there we can't see (or chose to ignore)....

What kind of information should I get from the wrecked plane to help identify exactly whose plane it was?

MIA over Chichi jima 1943-1945
Thank you for your research. The tail was kind of crunched, so maybe it wasn't a checkered pattern, but it was definately a black & yellow design.
I want to return to the site and get serial numbers etc..to do some serious research and hopefully let his family / relatives know what happened to him.

Greenpeace?!
DaveM suggested people who want wrecks left alone should join greenpeace? Wouldn't someone from Greenpeace want the naughty, dirty, wrecked planes OUT of the jungle where their rotting hulks will pollute the environment? Does DavM even know what Greenpeace is or does? Maybe he meant to say "Green pe...

"Airplanes grow in the jungle"? Sarcasm doesn't help. If someone has a different opinion then they are to be held in contempt? There is the wreckage of a cashed BETTY at the Chino Air Museum that is held in a state of conservation. It has been placed in a mock swamp with fake palm trees etc.. It sho...

Very neat story! Not that rare to find supplies secured away from the shore. They find this kind of stuff in Okinawa all the time in the hills.
Still, a great story.

B-17
There are a dozen B-17s around in the States. I took a flight on one last year out of the Chino Air Museum. However, I don't beleive PNG has many B-17s laying around, does it? The $100,000 the Govt. got for selling the plane might seem big at the time, but the loss in tourism over the years will be ...
