I was a platoon sergeant stationed in Tachikawa Japan in early part of the Korean War, and was sent to Iwo Jima for electronic work. I spent two weeks there with no duty, because our project was cancelled when we arrived. I spent many hours exploring the Island and its caves and bunkers, back when the place was just one big junk yard.

Back here at home, we have a lot of that rusty old wire in the beach grass here in Washington State, left over from 1942 when the U.S. thought the Japanese might invade the Washinton coast. Also many old concrete gun pits, but these are being removed to make room for homes. When I was 15 years old the army moved out of a huge camp here in Westport, and we spent many great days exploring the abandoned barracks and gun tubs, etc.
