Location Kharagpur Airfield is located at Kharagpur in West Bengal State in eastern India. Wartime History This airfield was developed as the first overseas base for the 20th AF Bomber Command with the new B-29 Superfortress. On July 7, 1944 Brigadier General LaVern G Saunders takes command. On August 29, 1944 Major General Curtis E. LeMay took command. During late February 1945, the 468th BG begins a movement to new bases on Tinian.
