Dick Williams 1982

Location
Located on the southern coast of Param Island.

Construction
The Japanese built a 335' x 3,900' airfield built during June 1943 primarily as a bomber base. 15 revetments for about 50 aircraft. There were no repair facilities because the airfield was hastily built.

Wartime History
The aerodrome and anti-aircraft positions were manned by the 48th Naval Guard.

American Missions Against Param
November 22, 1944 - May 12, 1945

Units based at Parman
958th Kokutai (F1M2 Pete) from Rabaul Jan 1944

Boneyard
Located on the northwest end of the island is a Japanese aircraft graveyard along the beach for 200 yards. Wreckage of various fighters and bombers were dumped here after being destroyed or damaged during air attacks. Postwar, aircraft wreckage was dumped to extend the seawall and 'sqare' off the island to allow the runway to be extended.
