March 3, 1942
(Raid 1) Australia's second worst air raid. 70 people
were killed and 24 aircraft destroyed, including 16 flying
boats
by an attacking force of nine A6M2 Zeros led by Akira Hayashi in a C5M2 to attack Broome. They took off from Keopang, Timor and attacked Broome for 15 minutes. One Zero was lost, another
ditched after the mission.
March 20 1942
(Raid 2) G4M Bettys attacked the airfield at high altitude. There are
a number of craters off the end of the strip and in the tidal
flats. One aboriginal was killed by a bomb splinter. No other
casualties or damage was caused.
