Wartime History
One of three Francis captured by American forces, and sent to the United States. They identified these as FE (Foreign Equipment) 1700, FE 1701, and FE 702.
Only 702 survived to this day, like the others were likely scrapped.
Storage
From February to July 1946, it was stored at Olmstead Field, Middletown, Pennsylvania where it was flown and evaluated. It was transferred the Smithsonian Institution in September 1948. In January 1949, the aircraft was shipped to Chicago Orchard Airport, Park Ridge, Illinois, a temporary storage facility. The National Air & Space Museum transferred the airplane to the storage site at Suitland, Maryland during the 1950s.
Today
The fuselage only remains in storage at the Paul E. Garber Facility.
