Aircraft History Built by Curtis in Buffalo, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-40N Warhawk serial number unknown. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia. Wartime History Delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as Kittyhawk serial number unknown. Assigned to an unknown squadron. No known nickname, nose art or markings. Mission History This Kittyhawk ditched into shallow water a few meters offshore from Merauke to the southeast of Merauke Airfield. Fate of the Pilot Reportedly, the pilot survived the ditching unhurt. Wreckage As of 1995, the engine and wreckage from this aircraft remain in shallow water roughly and partially above the surface in a tidal area near shore. References Some sources list the pilot as Australian "Sgt Haye" but no person with that name was a member of the RAAF. Possible identities: P-40N Kittyhawk A29-616 piloted by F/Sgt Victor Reginald Waldemar Andrews that crash landed or ditched April 30, 1944 after a collision with P-40N Kittyhawk A29-621 that crashed into the sea roughly a mile offshore.
