Aircraft History Built by Bell in Buffalo, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-39D-2-BE Airacobra serial number 41-38515. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 8th Fighter Group (8th FG), 80th Fighter Squadron (80th FS). Nose letter "J". No known nose art or nickname. On January 17, 1943 during a Japanese air raid, this aircraft was parked at Gurney Airfield (No.1 Strip) near Milne Bay. Later, modified into a model P-39D-4 photographic reconnaissance configuration. Ultimate fate unknown, not lost in combat or accident, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
