Wartime History
Ditched May 28, 1943 a half mile offshore from Torrey Pines, north of La Jolla, California. At 5:40 AM, a 1st Lieutenant was the last of three P-38s to take off from the NAS North Island on Coronado Island off San Diego. The aircraft practiced a low altitude formation dawn patrol and low level attack training flight. This P-38's propeller touched the water and was badly damaged, but he successfully ditched the plane and was later picked up by by a US Navy launch.
