Constructors Number 1339. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38H-5-LO Lightning serial number 42-66828. Disassembled and shipped overseas and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force, 475th Fighter Group, 431st Fighter Squadron. Assigned to pilot Morriss. No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On June 23, 1944 took off from Finschafen Airfield piloted by Captain Waldemer L. Hawkins, Jr. on a flight bound for Milne Bay. When this aircraft failed to arrive it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Presumed lost in the Milne Bay area. Memorials Hawkins was officially declared dead on February 22, 1946. He earned the Air Medal. Hawkins is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing.
